Chasing Chimeras

Hybrid ceramics project

We are excited to announce our 2nd ceramics symposium in Syros island, Cyclades, Greece themed “Chasing Chimeras: hybrid ceramics project”.

In Hermoupolis, Syros, from 24/5 to 1/6 six important greek ceramists will meet in order to explore the hybridity in ceramic art. The approach will be double since on the one hand, the hybrids of the greek mythology will start the inspiration (such as Chimeras, Pegasus, Sirens etc) and on the other hand the artists will have to work in couples and merge their unique artistic identities in one piece of art. That means that the 6 invited artists will create three original artworks during the symposium, making possible the impossible nature of every hybrid.

The invited artists are:

  • Mirka Drapaniotou
  • Maggy Ioannou
  • Stavros Perakis
  • Fani Skoulikidi
  • Melina Xenaki
  • Giannis Zois

Daily there will be visiting hours in the Chimera Culture workshop so the public can meet the artists and see them working on the spot.

Moreover on 30 & 31/5 Mirka Drapaniotou and Giannis Zois will present a 2 day masterclass. During that they will teach how to change a simple form (wheel thrown or handbuilt) using the darting technique and also the theory and applications of terra sigilatta in high temp.

The original artwork that will occur during the symposium will be exhibited in the multi awarded boutique hotel Aristide Syros and the opening will be on 31/5.

Pandora’s Box

The myth

Gods scheme to revenge Prometheus for stealing the gift of fire hasn’t been completed by his torture to be eaten alive by an eagle on Mt Caucasus. After him being released the gods came with a more elaborate plan. Hephestus makes out of clay a woman and the gods give her all female characteristics, she was Pandora. She was Piven as a bride to Epimitheus, brother of prometheus and as a dowry he receives a box with the instruction never to be opened. Pandora has received as part of the female characteristics, that of curiosity, she opens the box and releases all the evil and pain in the world. Just in time she closes the lid and keeps in the box Hope. This box, maybe the most important artefact in the history of art, was probably a lidded ceramic pot.

Behind the myth

Pandora, as well as Eve are two similar cases of women that were created to fulfil a single purpose and whey they did they were shamed forever. How could they be responsible for their actions when they were created to perform those actions? Similar stories of women unleashing evil and disaster in the world exist throughout the world history and were a clever way to serve the change from the prehistoric matriarch societies, with the mother goddess etc, to the patriarch societies that were so threatened by the remains of the female dominance.

Today

In the collective unconscious Pandora is a monster woman, that unleashed evil. So does Eve and many more. This is happening for millennia so a specific group of people is blamed only due to their gender and pass arbitrary specific characteristics. Unfortunately the society still accuses women for wearing the wrong dress, saying the wrong words, messing with the wrong people.

For the first Pandora and every pandora since that suffer in injustice, prejudice, discrimination, hoping one day we can smash the stereotyped, let this be a start.
